HOW TO SWEETEN HOMEMADE YOGURT

For some people it takes a little time to adjust to the taste of homemade yogurt, especially if you have been accustomed to eating sweetened store-bought varieties. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to achieve sweetness without adding unhealthy sugars or compromising the nutritional and probiotic benefits of homemade yogurt.

Natural sweeteners such as honey and maple syrup, enhance the flavour and provide just the right amount of sweetness. Start with a small amount and gradually add more to achieve your taste preference.

Sugar substitutes such as agave, rice syrup, coconut sugar, coconut syrup, stevia, erythritol, and monk fruit sweetener are also popular sugar alternatives. When using sugar substitutes ensure you follow the recommended serving instructions, as they can be much sweeter than sugar and some have a bitter aftertaste. We used honey and maple syrup in the following recipes. Omit or swap to your preferred sweetener and adjust to taste.

VANILLA

Adding a little bit of vanilla or a combination of vanilla and natural sweetener is a simple way to upgrade the flavour profile of homemade yogurt. For the most luxurious vanilla experience, use vanilla extract or vanilla paste. A little bit goes on long way.
